The section of ancient Russian art is considered to be one of the most important sections of the museum. Ancient Russian art is represented by reproductions of frescos, icons and copper art works.
The collection includes reproductions of wall paintings from the Sophisky and Nickolo- Dvorischensky Cathedrals in Novgorod, the Snetogorsky and Mirozhsky monasteries in Pskov, the Yspenia church in Metelevo, the Saint George church in Staraya Ladoga, the Saint Mother Birth Cathedral in Ferapontov Luzhetsky Monastery in Mozhaysk, and the Saint Mother Birth Cathedral of Sawino- Storozhevskv monastery near Zvenieorod.
There are a number of icons depicting the Holy Mother including, "The Holy Mother Vladimirskaya" (the first part of the 18th century), "The Holy Mother Tikhvinskaya" (18th century), "The Holy Mother Feodorovskaya" (late 18th , early 19th centuries), "The Holy Mother Iverskaya"(19 century), and "The Holy Mother Znamenie" (late 19th , early 20th centuries). In addition, "The Holly Mother Carpet" (the second half of the 19th century), and "The Repose of the Virgin" (19th century), which reflect the special worship of the Virgin Mother as protector of the whole of Russia.
A relatively small collection of copper art (27 items) has been added to the section of ancient Russian art. and includes the late period of copper plaster (18th - 19th centuries). This period is connected with Staroobryadnistvo, one, of the leading centers of production of highly artistic copper work and from which copper forms were sent all over Russia. According to this style, each is cast with 20 miniature marks, creating a complex composition that depicts scenes from religious holidays.
