Alexandrovsk Post.
«There are wooden pavements along the streets, everywhere is cleaness and order, and even
in the outlying streets, where the poor are pressed close together, there are no puddles
or garbage. The center of the post consists of the church, the Governor of the Island's
house, a post and telegraph agency..
For the most part the houses are new, built in the European style, with iron roofs and
often painted on the outside. There is no lime or good stone on sakhalin, and so there are
no stone buildings..."
-quoted from A. Chekhov's book 'Sakhalin
Island', 1890 - 1895

Bell from the Zhonkyer lighthouse. A cast inscription states that Alexey Mikhailovich,
Prince and Grand Duke of Russia, donated the bell to Sinozersk Hermitage during the office
of its builder, the Monk Moisey, in 1651.
How this bell wound up in the Zhonkyer lighthouse remains a mystery to this day. Today,
the bell has been moved to the Shroud of the Mother of God Cathedral |
