| Igor Samarin was born
on Sakhalin Island in 1960. Sakhalin Island, along with the Kuril Islands, comprises the
Sakhalin Region of Russia and is located in the Russian Far East (north of Japan). After
graduating from the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Teacher’s College, he taught history at one of the
city’s secondary schools and worked as a researcher in the Archaeology Laboratory of the
College. At the present time, he is Chief of the History Department at the Sakhalin
Regional Museum in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk while also a post-graduate student at the St.
Petersburg Academy of Art. He’s author of over 40 scientific papers on Sakhalin history
including seafaring history, archaeology, and Japanese architecture and fortifications on
Sakhalin during the Karafuto Period. His next scientific article will address the presence
of glass fishing floats discovered along specific beaches on the island. And one of his
past articles develops the 140 year history of lighthouses, Russian, Japanese, and Soviet,
on the island. Igor has enjoyed photography since his early childhood and has participated
in several photo exhibitions, the most recent was held at the Regional Scientific Library
during September, 1999. He’s explored almost all of Sakhalin Island (almost 1000 km
long) using his old Subaru 4WD station wagon and, as a result of these expeditions, has
over 1000 photos in his archives which include landscapes depicting the seasons and moods
of Sakhalin’s unique natural environment and topography along with historical and
architectural monuments. His long-term ambition is to depict Sakhalin Island's ancient
history through a collection of color prints and slides. |
